Thanks CKK!
I don't understand how Microsoft retaining control (for an indefinite period of time) of the lower level protocol lessens Microsoft's advantage and promotes third-party developers.

Each time that the third-party developer sells a product, Microsoft gets a slice of the pie. And MS can influence them just like they did by negotiating the "special partnership programs" for the PC vendors that reduced (or eliminated) product lines that were competitive with Microsoft.

Now, if MS develops an entirely new protocol, they have a right to make money on it for a certain period of time -- just like the companies that put up money for researching new medications. However, at some point, the general use protocols should become public domain. That is what the **original** idea behind copyright is.

Too bad all of these software, media and drug companies are litigating the meaning out of it.

I guess the color of justice is green ... and you are innocent until proven broke.
