I set up a thin client-based web-platform service in 1999 over broadband into UK domestic homes. There was tremendous enthusiasm for the system, no concerns over data privacy, a great feeling that "at last, no more computer problems", and great performance for office aps.

The only problem was redraw speed for graphics which limited us to 8-bit colour. We could stream video at TV resolution, but not 800x600 or 1024x768 desktops. With greater speed & more advanced thin clients, this should soon be trivial.

I wouldn't want one, but I found plenty of people who did. This isn't a pipe-dream, but equally it won't be the only computing paradigm.
