1) RIAA has only idiots in their marketing.
2) If songs were good, people will be more willing to pay for them. The quality (especially sound quality) of CDs have been going down steadily for the past 20 years. The only way to force people to buy the songs is to induce FUD into those whom refuse to give in to poor qualities.
3) The lawyers have them stuck in this awkward position and they can't get out of it.

Of all things, I would like to know the ratio of songs people downloaded to the songs they actually think is worthwhile to keep on their HDs.

I'll bet RIAA won't back off until the artists start to disassociate themselves from this kind of rhetoric.
