NO, that's not completely true. A friend's cousin's former girlfriend's aunt's sister's son's boss's butler heard from a reliable source the full truth.

All MAJOR distros, like RedHat, and SuSE, must pay 50% of the earnings from the free downloads. For smaller distros, only 30% is taken from all free downloads. And from kernel.org, a wooping 95% of the profit is given to the big LT (5% goes to his employer). This obviously also applies for all the patches, irrelavent of how small.

Of that week's revenue from the free downloads, 50% goes to the developer of the week (sometimes its him). So, yes you are right in general, but sometimes he makes more!!!
