When Amazon started, Netscape Enterprise Server was the only SSL server
They first deployed on Sun's Solaris, running Enterprise Server (remember, Netscape invented the Secure Sockets Layer, and without that, the Web would still be a bunch of photos of people's cats). There was no Java. All server-side applications ran as CGIs written in C. In fact, at that time, Microsoft were still saying the "Internet" was a flash in the pan phenomenon, DEC VT320's were among the commonest computer interface most people ever got to use, and you still had to build a socket for Mosaic to run on Windows/DOS...

So, it's a bit of a hairball, but when are they supposed to find the time to switch it off and rebuild it? Half of John Carrol's much-vaunted Fortune 1000 companies are still running Enterprise Server (on their much quieter websites) for preciesely the reason that they dare not switch their systems off.

For instance, I bet if we pulled down Paris and revoked everyone's claims to any of the land, we could build a much better and more efficient city. As it is, all we have is Paris: it's a nice place, people tend to go there, the traffic's awful, somehow it keeps running.
