a bit more, from an x-insider
i worked at amazon, and can verify this. Amazon has done incredible things with Linux.

However...

Amazon's linux systems are the biggest pile of very-hard-to-maintain spagetti code you could ever imagine. as a business, it would be a herculean task to duplicated what they've done with the no-end-in-sight overtime of small army of overworked employees.

as much as i like alternatives to microsoft's windows, there is great power in leveraging common programming patterns/tools built into .Net (like msmq, biztalk, etc), instead of building the inhouse, as amazon does with their linux systems.

also, as a business using amazon's systems, i would be a bit worried about wholy depending on them. similar perils as outsourcing urcing...commoditization & loss of custom business innovation: not for everyone.

in the end, this is all good: microsoft will smell the coffee brewing, and eventually lower prices and write better software. well, maybe.
