why don't we all just give up?

I've often heard the whine of the frustrated microserf troubled by the fact that life isn't simple and people should just punt and all use microsoft. The fact remains that the only reason MS makes any kind of goodwill moves at all is because of the competition worrying them. If they didn't have that they could easily shoehorn Palladium or whatever its next incarnation (LaGrande?) and name its own price.

You could easily find yourself having to apply for a license to write your own program on your own computer.

I understand and know some people who work with MS dev products and appreciate that its a legitimate business tool. However I am just awe struck by people who Evangelize it. Its one thing to be a industry prostitute but its wholly another thing to pay to be one and then smile and say everybody else should do the same.

We are quickly giving away the digital landscape and future human freedom. Open source software in conjunction with occasionally propietary solutions would be the way to go. They can both coexist.

MS trying to stamp it out is outright illegal.
