Good Software Writers...
Chances are, there will be another vendor with products that will fill in for that vendor.

For example - many businesses run on Macintosh computers. For just about everything on Windows, there is an equivalent on the Mac. Accounting, POS, inventory, Office suites, database, time management, PIM, project management, etc. Sure, it may not be the same, but there are cross-platform packages (MYOB, Office, PIM, etc) and there are alternatives.

If the software was designed correctly, cross platform would not be an issue. That's the problem with software today - nobody thinks about the big picture. Make your wares easy to take from OS to OS and you will be rewarded with increased sales.

Imagine if you make some awesome productivity software. You code for Windows where you are one of 100 vendors of that type of software. With a little more work, you could port it to OSX or Linux and possibly be the ONLY solution on that platform. (With 3-5% of the computer market, the Mac market is pretty large, and I'd imagine Linux is as large as well.) Price it right and you will own the market.
