Simple Answer for you
Suppose you a Linux shop, you've chosen to stadardize on Linux. Then a 3rd party software vendor that requires you to use SQL server comes into the picture. Now you have server that could run this software but it's Linux. Do you buy a new server with Windows or if you could have a Linux version on MSSQL would you use that. I think you'd choose the Linux version of MSSQL.

This would be smart move for Microsoft seeing the market share Linux is getting. If Proprietary Unix is being taken over by Linux that's a large market. Now since Linux is open source that means Microsoft can get a good look at the code and make sure thier software works slick on Linux.

If they have to compete with Oracle on Linux and Windows then it makes sense to compete with a product that also runs on Windows and Linux.
