First, F/OSS mitigates the risk of apps will no longer be available, in theory. You can hire a programmer to hook with the source, even thought it's no longer supported? Is that a real-world scenario? Maybe, for mission critical apps.
Secondly, AT&T's monopoly, a natural monopoly protected by law by the way, was based soley on the fact that is would hurt consumers to have a competing firm. The tremendous amount of public money required to duplicate AT&T's infrastructure would more than wipe out any savings consumers would see with competitive prices. So AT&T has a monopoly, but they are not free to charge whatever they like.
