Linux could be market subject of monopoly
ATT was condidered a monopoly, even though there were other phone companies out there doing the same thing with the same technology, even to the point of using ATT's own lines.

The problem was, in part, that ATT could make a change to the technology, or subsidize their local market with profits from their Long distance market, that the others vendors couldn't afford to keep up, there by going under or be bought by ATT.

Red Hat could grow to be the major vendor of Linux, them make some drastic changes to their version of Linux to the point were 3rd party software writers couldn't afford to make 2 totally different version of their software (as it sits now, there are usually just minor differences between their versions). So what they could do is drop the others to write for the largest seller.

What good is your version of Linux if you can no longer get apps for it?
