I know.
There will always be Linux distributions.

But there is a difference between a commercial distribution and a non-commercial distribution.
Even ZDNet recognizes this. An article about Munich's plans reported that the city had chosen Debian, a non-commercial distribution, and would use two local firms to guide implementation. (By the way, that sounds risky to me, particularly considering that after Munich's Linux decision city employees wereunable to find local concerns with Linux experience. Means those companies now selected haven't had much practice. Sorry, off-topic.)

One important distinction for a commercial product is that major software providers assure their products will work with the distribution.

The two commercial distributions now are Red Hat and SuSE. Given Novell's problems, there's a chance Red Hat can seize their chance and reduce SuSE to irrelevance.

And then there's only one.
