The quote misses inportant facts...
I would suspect that Red Hat generates linceses volume similar to Novell's. But the statment is confusing for several reasons. The quote states that Novell licensing revenue dropped by 5% and Red Hat's increased 23%.

What is the baseline for the percentages; revenue streams for each company, revenue in the US or worldwide? It doesn't state this clearly. If this is based on the company revenue, this does not mean that much. For example, 63% of Red Hat revenue equates to around $124 million based on 2005 revenues (63% of $196 Million total revenue). While at Novell 20% equates to $220 million (20% of 1.1 Billion total revenue). Based on that, who sold more licenses? Novell is the clear winner by almost $100 million.

I'm not a financial person by a long shot. But using statistics without a clear picture is just one of many media practices that cause so much confusion.
