There's also the question of CALs for file and print servers
Whenever the cost of running a Samba server is compared, it is as if a Pentium 4 running Linux/Samba against Pentium 4 running Windows "Advanced" server was a straight head-to-head comparison of capacity. The difference is that the Windows setup can only handle as many clients as you are willing to pay CALs for. They compare some Windows system with a pathetic eight-CAL limit, or something, with a Samaba/Lnux server which is (surprise surprise) managing to meet the same workload, as say "Look; the Windows server hardly costs any more than the Linux one... So, stick with what you know." The difference is that the Samba solution can carry on expanding at no extra cost until the server itself runs out of resources (which is usually HUNDREDS of clients: the equivalent of thousands of extra dollars, in CALs, for the equivalent Windows solution).

This is the difference with open source solutions: they come fully featured and capable of exploiting the resources of the hardware to the fullest extent that the hardware can respond to those demands. Powerful hardware is relly cheap, these days: why deliberately restrict it by installing underpowered software?

By the way, why is the word 'NEW' enclosed in single quotes on these forums? Am I just beng a pedantic Unix-type person in asking whether this punctuation actually serves a purpose?
