There are other oversights
They sort of talk out of both sides of their mouth. In another place they claim that every $1 is MS sales generates $7.50 in sales for their partners. Muliply your MS-caculated TCO by 8 and the number will apparently be more accurate.

I want to oversee one of those MS funded studies because we can't duplicate making OSS more expensive. Just take Office. Replace Office with OpenOffice on a 1,000 seats. Let's say you get the bargain basement big customer price of $299.00. Times 1,000 seats is 300K. For that, depending on your overhead, you could hire a full time support tech...a tech dedicated just to OpenOffice mind you, not the whole desktop...for four years. Right? I could probably squeeze that to five, almost six years. Figure 40K salary, guess at a 1/3 more for benefits and taxes. Call it 52 total, so six years. Which means I could hire two full time OO support techs for three years just for the license costs.

Our prime customer has MS Office, 1,500 seats on one campus and...holy crap, has five FTE's on the help desk. Separate out the desktop calls and you still have 3 full time people handling Office support.

That means I could still have 3 full time techs taking OO support calls and one person teaching OpenOffice classes full time plus support when they're not teaching classes, and still save the customer one full FTE x 3 years (because you get one of the support techs for free), that's just license costs. Figure you can drop your trainer to PT status at the end of a year for more savings.

Those are quick and dirty but they can't be too far off. Hey, maybe MS will give me some money to do a more detailed study. happy
