Here's how they did it
I don't have the links, but following through on what was on Microsoft's "benchmark" site. You see, it's part measured, part extrapolated. They extrapolated to throw in a fairly hefty training cost, as if we didn't incure those same costs whenever we move from one Microsoft version to another (besides, one-time costs dilute proportionally, the longer you extend your timeline). Then they assumed the same number of administrators for a Linux farm as for Microsoft, at a higher salary. Bingo! Linux costs more.

The organization I was last with accumulated many Microsoft servers during the conversion to client-server. The new CIO is taking care of that, but we did gain the operating experience. Likewise, where I am now we have acquired outfits with MS servers. The common experience accords with published benchmarks; there is a more than 3-1 ratio of support personnel for the MS servers, and I can tell you we don't pay the Linux administrators three times as much, so we don't spend nearly as much on operating salaries. You get the answer you need by cooking the numbers and hope nobody notices. Was it Will Rogers who said, "Figures don't lie, but liars sure can figure."

MS could come out with the claim that the switch to open source hurts U.S. IT employment. But I hope they don't resort to lumping McJobs in with IT professionals.
