These so called "studies" fail to mention the baseline on how they are done. They take a room full of MCSE's, split them into two groups, and say, "group one, you guys setup and maintain a Windows solution. Group two, you guys setup and maintain a Linux solution." Of course the "Linux" group will need training at x amount of dollars, and it will obviously take them longer...blah blah blah. So of course, MS looks like the cheaper solution. In the real world however, a company will simply hire someone who already knows what they are doing and bypass all the bs training costs. For example, here at the company I work for, we are migrating from Novell/Windows servers and desktops to Linux. How much is it costing us? Well, nothing so far for hardware since we are using existing hardware, and nothing software wise. So basically it's costing them my salary which they pay me whether I'm supporting Linux or Windows. Please someone tell me how Windows is cheaper?!!?
