Open Office has already got there, providing an easy to use alternative to MS Office, just as easy to install: and a few extras such as producing .PDF files, and reading and writing in just about every popular format. An even better version coming out next March! For Windows and Linux.
As for Linux OS, tried Xandros or Linspire for ease of use and completeness?
