Wow! What an attitude.
I am working in a lab with 12 peoples and we study from bacteria phototaxis response to crystal structre of proteins. Not only Linux and OpenOffice give us a lot of raliable computing, but also they do a far better job than Win2k and WinXP that we have (a lot of FREE scientific apps runs in Unix, SGI or Linux, but no Windows support).

Linux and OpenOffice also proved to be more verstile. The situation is that sometimes you purchase a equipment that comes with a controlling computer with different OSes (Sun, Mac or Windows). For these machines, you cannot install MS Office in all of them (and it means when you do not use the equipment, the controlling computer is sitting the collecting dust. Well, ok, people use it for internet surfing). However, by installing OpenOffice in all of them plus these desktop computers that we use (Red Hat Linux 9, OpenOffice 1.1 installed), we have a very realiable solution for all our computing needs and more. We almost never run out of computer for paper writing or data sharing.

The trick here is that, yes, you do enjoy Microsoft world that they build around you and I congratulate you that you enjoy and make good use of them. But, just because you enjoy your system does not mean other system sucks. This is the where most of the "emotional" discussions come from (i.e. Mac vs PC, ....).

Just try to share with what I observed. No mean of any offense.

Happy new year.
