all software is a compromise and flawed just like everything else, including the software development model (no such thing as perfection). A peice of software can however be a good tool despite this. There is a "good enough" level.
For a while Microsoft products didn't reach this level, and Linux did, but now I think all are good enough (inc OSX).

The myriad of tools for all the different OSs are different, so you choose different tools for different jobs based on your assessment of the tool. Part of the decision over tools includes (1) your personal skill with the tool and (2) what the rest of the people you work with use.
Cost of course is another attribute of a tool. (and Benefits of using the tool based on cost).
