In a way they always have been
People have complained in the past that MS was too aggressive. Part of that aggressiveness was the constant fear that they could let something slip by and they'd end up losing. Others in the business have called it paranoia.

One of the things I remember BG said he worried about was complacency setting in, that they wouldn't pay enough attention to the competitive threats to their business.

In a way MS has always been behind the curve as well, playing catch-up for a bit and then surpassing their competitors. They were behind with PCs (actually IBM was, but MS didn't have a PC OS either in the beginning), when many other companies had gotten into it first. They were behind on the GUI. And they were behind the curve on the internet. They still managed to succeed in all these areas.

MS recently claimed they've now surpassed Java in middleware adoption, with .Net. I believe they said their market share is a bit above 50%. And this was with Ballmer at the helm. So I think it gives some reason to be confident that even though they're behind the curve again, they can still come out ahead.
