They will still be handcuffed on hosted-software services
They must protect the twin cash cows at all costs. They will not be allowed to use Linux, MySQL, JBoss, Apache, . . . . . They will be forced to eat their own dog food, which is not all that tasty, is very expensive, and, even internally, they will have a hard time getting the modifications they need. The ace in the hole is that they can leverage the Windows desktop, but that only goes so far.

I also think it is about time for Google to come out swinging and introduce a plugin for Firefox that will give them the ability to create richer interactive web applications. The other important thing this brings, is that it will reduce Microsofts abilities to set standards and make things IE only. This could push Firefox over 20% in a very short period. If Google were to keep the plugin open, for all to use, even make it an open source project, this could be the killer app that launches Firefox.
