PGP/GNUPG is great for keeping the Feds from reading your email, but SPF is addressing another problem altogether.
If I can use SPF to confirm a messages origin, then I can block unwanted mail before my server processes even processes it. That prevents us from have to run messages through antivirus and antispam software and saves me a lot of processing power.
