You are correct
I've been in I.T. since the DOS days, and have never found a
single user, from a group of a thousand or so office workers,
that uses anything not found in Office 97. In fact, few do
anything more advanced than linking spreadsheets.

When's the last time you received a spreadsheet that wasn't
compatible with whatever version of Excel you use? Have you
ever even heard of this happening? I haven't. I've never had a
problem, or a complaint, exchanging any MS formatted
<ocument. And I don't even use MS Office.

The truth is, Microsoft has made their fortune by selling
software that is "good enough". And when it comes to Office,
any version you have is "good enough" so there is no need to
upgrade.
