... performed by Apple last year, which offered some
interesting data points but which couldn't possibly be
*equivalent.* Among other things, Apple had to rely on
the GCC compiler for both platforms to run that
particular benchmark - no Intel compiler was available
for the MacG5 - but the GCC compiler is sub-optimal
for the Xeon, which I understand runs better (naturally)
with the Intel compiler.

SO, as you say, it's ultimately decided by fitness for
task and bang-for-buck.
