There are a couple of ways to look at this. First Vista is only an operating system. MSFT said from the beginning that Vista was first and foremost about better security/reliability and new features for developers. Security/reliability is ante: they have to do that and you can find lots about how. The most obvious is that most users will no longer need to run in admin mode. They're also doing a lot of work to make IE sandboxed. But most of the other cool technology is stuff that will manifest itself in new applications: the new presentation technology (which is not about icons as you suggest), the new workflow technology and the new Web services infrastructure. Developers (both at MSFT and elsewhere) will be able to build a lot of very cool applications that are next to impossible to do today on any platform.

In terms of end-user facing features, they've already showsn some of those in the current builds. The most interesting are changes to how documents are displayed and organized. They have come up with a pretty cool approach to virtual folders that will make it much easier for users to find the files they need. Their indexing service has innovative ways of grouping and displaying files that are related to each other. The system shows very detailed thumbnails of files so you can find what you're looking for quicker without opening files. The browser also has several improvements. One neat feature which I haven't seen anywhere else is that when you ALT/TAB through multiple browser windows the system displays a high resolution thumbnail of the Web pages so you it's easier to stop at the page you're looking for. Also, when you have multiple windows open on the taskbar you can mouse over them and a thumbnail of each window pops up. They have also added RSS support in very interesting ways that you need to see to understand.

I suggest trying to attend a local event somewhere so you can play with a Vista system to see for yourself. I'm not saying it's the best thing in the world but there is a lot of new stuff.
