But you're forgetting one detail.
The reason for Quark's continued dominance, in spite of their
horrible support, is that the publishing industry relies on
AppleScript-automated workflows. Most of the experienced
scripters are intimately familiar with Quark (despite its fussy
implementation and constant undocumented changes every time
they release an update). Indesign has a much better scripting
interface, and a lot of scripters have taken the plunge and
switched, but it really requires a radical change of the workflow,
and since most scripters are too busy to learn a new product,
Quark is still hanging in there.

Photoshop, on the other hand, hasn't been scriptable until very
recently, so there are very few automated workflows built
aroundit, so it will just be an individual decision to adopt a new
program. Photoshop's fortunes could change rapidly if a better
program came along.
