The Min Spec's for A Linux System
Assuming you are using Xvesa instead of a more robust xServer ande using fluxbox/blackbox as WM Manager you can get away with a 486DX with 16MB Ram -

In fact there are several mini-distros that do this...

DSL http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ (50 MB Linux Distro with EMail, HTTP Server, FTP Server, SQL-Lite DB, Word Processor with spell check, VOIP, 3 Web Browsers, 2-3 Text Editors, C Compiler, handfull of games, Spreadsheet, Paint App, Media Player,SMB Server, and some other odds and ends. DSL is a stripped down version of Knoppix with as many apps that can be squezed into 50 MB. The downside of DSL is that they stripped most the documentation out of the apps and are using very light-weight apps that have less functionality than the heavier apps. DSL uses Fluxbox as its WM.

http://www.goosee.com/puppy/ is a 60 MB Linux distro and is rather quite amazing what they crammed into it. It requires 64 MB of RAM if installed to the HD or their is a Swap set up on the (128MB if not). Puppy has pretty much everything a home enduser would need. Unlike DSL, which provides basic features, Puppy has more full featured apps. The downside is that doesn't have the hardware detection of DSL. Puppy uses FVM95 as its WM (Meaning it looks and works a lot like Win 9X or Win Classic).

Austrumi http://cyti.latgola.lv/ruuni/index_en.html Another 50 MB linux distro... This one has Gimp, Inkscape, Firefox, Apache, MPlayer, ABiWord, Gnumersic, and some other larger apps into the distro. Austrumi is slackware based and they use OpenBox as the WM.

--These mini-distro tend to have a menu Item called install to HardDrive (When you select it well-- Installs Linux on the HD).

There is also http://www.watsky.net/ Beatrix a sub 200 MB Distro based on Ubuntu that runs with 64 MB Memory. Again it has a nifty install to HD option in the menu. Beatrix was originally designed to run on VIA Mini-ITX MOBOS so it should do just fine on old PII and PIII's.

As far as internet goes I would recommend DSL over Dial Up... Why? Becuase of two reasons;

1. Many of the existing Dial Up companies require that you use a stupid custom dialer. NS, NZ, AOL, and PeoplePC all require this stupid custom dialer and they all require Windows.

2. WinModems... The WinModem problem didn't magically go away. You still have to putz with finding WinModem drivers if you don't get a full modem.

Another reason is that DSL is now as low as $15 a month. MSN and AOL dialup cost about $10 more than the low end DSL.
