- What's cheaper or standard about Windows?
-
Mac OSX costs $129. Windows XP Pro costs $199. XP home is
slightly less than OSX but is a really poor OS. As for Windows
being a standard, Microsoft Windows is the most proprietary
software on the planet. They put standards into their OS and
change or corrupt them so they won't run with anything but
Windows. Then other operating systems instead of using
standards, have to compromise thier products to be compatible
with Windows because Windows runs on 90% of the computers.
Then there is the compatibility problems associated with trying
to be compatible with all Windows 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000, XP, XP
Home and maybe someday if it ever gets released Vista.
Oh, the reasons PCs are cheap for the masses has less to do
with Microsoft and more to do with the competition between
Intel and AMD and the mass production of cheap motherboards.
What AMD and Intel charge for the hardware in your computer
has droppedby a huge factor over the years. Microsoft's price for
software has stayed pretty close to the same. Microsoft didn't
get to be the richest company in the world by lowering prices for
software. It got that way by being very aggressive at marketing
and partnering and by cutting corners. The most effective
method of marketing by Microsoft is by using its monopolistic
leveredge in one market to destroy innovation and competition
in other markets. An example would be IE vs Netscape. Others
would be Windows media vs Quicktime and Real. Apple beat
everyone to the music market so it appears that Quicktime and
iTunes will be around for a while and it seems Apple has taken a
few lessons from Microsoft while running with the music
business.
Well I don't care too much about Windows problems because I
do not use Windows and don't have to depend on a crappy OS to
make a living. The Graphics guy above was right about color
reproduction. You can settle for Windows if you want. I'm just
glad we have a choice. If you like to control every aspect of your
computing experience and want a very stable OS then you
should like Linux, BSD and others. If you are a creative type and
want a superior computing experience, an operating system that
makes works for you and makes you more powerful get a Mac. If
you just want to be like everyone else get Windows. - Posted by: MacGeek2121 Posted on: 09/13/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
