We need to be careful what we fault MS for ...
MS gets faulted for a number of technical issues when it comes to Windows. I agree that this is unfortunate. If MS had not cut as many corners as they did and had not done so many things 'cheap and dirty', most of us would have waited at least a decade, if not longer, for an affordable PC. MS actually worked a lot of magic to make the original Windows PCs viable on 386's, 486's and even early Pentiums. Unix type systems WITH FULL FEATURED GUIs simply won't begin to run on such primitive hardware, but Microsoft made it happen and they should get credit where credit is due. Part of that equation is the fact that they sacrificed some degree of color coordination in order to put the PC into the hands of the working person. I would argue that the person who faults them for that is simply playing the role of an elitist who values quality to the point that half the population gets left out. Microsoft simply did what they had to do to make it happen and now, belatedly to be sure, they are making an attempt at fixing things now that the hardware has caught up. And I don't fault them for that either. But this is most certainly a shot across the bow for Apple computer, since it will make Windows machines even more viable in a space once owned by Macs. But who could argue that they should stand still just to protect a competitor? No, sorry, but I can only applaud them for attempting to better meet the needs of their users. So, I'm with you on this one Don.
