Forget the first two paragraphs of your post, they are meaningless. (And yes I do color matching)

The fact of the matter is that when MS did this you could buy a PC for the cost of a Mac color monitor. The cheaper (RGB based) monitors were what the vast majority wanted in order to keep costs down.

And yes it added a nickel, in fact it added a LOT of nickels...
