Yes, but back to my original point
"To recap, that's ONLY with the AAC tracks purchased form the iTMS. Other AACs (if you ripped a CD straight to AAC, etc.) will convert straight to any other supported format with no extra steps."

Yeh, but what I'm suggesting is that Apple should go for this, the argument for DRM died when Apple put out iTMS on Mac with almost no DRM and the tracks sold well.

That points to the DRM being the problem, since its trivial to pirate iTMS tracks (same as its trivial to pirate CD tracks, even copy protected CDs) then DRM isn't the answer, its only another reason for online music stores to fail and should be removed.

I'm suggesting mild watermarking (e.g. the slow phase shifting technique or similar tricks). Since they survive through conversions (which DRM doesn't) and don't stop the user doing anything thats legal.

Since the bulk of portable players are MP3s, by not allowing those players to be used, you're pushing those owners into non-legal music and limiting your own market.

How can musicians sell music without DRM?
How can farmers sell apples without machine guns implacements round their orchards?

The DRM doesn't work, so why have it?
