RE: Crappy Quality MP3?
>I'm assuming Apple would spit out MP3s direct from AAC (or better still directly from the original PCM via a download) to a reasonable bit rate MP3.

If you buy an AAC from the music store iTunes won't allow this. It's part of the DRM deal with the recording companies. You can burn those files to a CD in different formats but you can't convert it to MP3 all inside the iTunes jukebox. To recap, that's ONLY with the AAC tracks purchased form the iTMS. Other AACs (if you ripped a CD straight to AAC, etc.) will convert straight to any other supported format with no extra steps.

>As for the price, don't Apple do Album pricing on iTMS?

Yes, they do. The guy who posted the original comment doesn't know squat about the iTMS. Most albums are 9.99, though there are a few that are more expensive when they have a large number of tracks, or unusually long tracks (the highest I've seen so far was 12.99.)

Then there is the entire issue of not buying a entire album. I've bought a couple on iTMS, but the majority of my purchases have been single tracks. There's often times when I like 2 or 3 tracks on a particular CD a lot, but hate the rest of the CD. That's where iTMS, Musicmatch and Napster all really shine. For 2 or 3 bucks I can buy ony the tracks I like and not have to shell out $13-$20 for a CD that I'll only use 20% of.
