Suns problem is that Linux will eventually be as good as Solaris.
But the fact that Solaris is still better (for servers) means that they want to leverage that advantage against HP and IBM which do not have strong Unix offerings. Since HP-UX abd AIX are not anywhere close to Solaris, HP and IBM have a lot more reason to embrace Linux.

Hopefully Sun can figure out a way to phase out Solaris when it is time.
