Read it, acouple of times in the last few years...
I understand the theories, I understand the need and the benefit also of literate programming and other sound concepts of "Computing" as a science. I also understand the realities of the world and while I can appreciate what Knuth and Date pray for and will not happen. Oracle will get bigger to lock-in customers who are on the biggest and, relatively, most popular software platforms to their database. Always good to keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
As far as theory, look at D and the thrid Manifesto and they are great and at least some concepts are going to get implemented by some of the vendors, but so what, it will never be perfect because EVERYONE needs it and not everyone can understand the highest level of concepts, or for that matter even the medium ones. It would be great to work with only Boyce-Codd Normal form or would it? I'll just stick with Third Normal form, ?Vendor?-SQL, and taking it like they give it because if I could change the paradigm I would have already started on it. Take the critical stance and I will stand behind you and congragulate you on the moral authority you will have, but, I will also still have one foot in the gutter and one in the gold.
