Actually in M$' recently completed fourth fiscal QTR, four out of 7 of M$'s business segments were profitable. And of the other three, only the Home and Entertainment segement is a glaring example of poor busines strategy. And we all know that probably 2/3 of the $340M loss in this segment is due to XBox consoles and the other 1/3 is due to absolutely lame ideas like MSN TV.

And between you me and the wall, the last I checked google was giving away just about everything they development. Now to me, that sounds a lot like your IE killed Netscape excuse, only you're probably inclined to give google a pass. And let's assume for a moment that OSS doesn't totally take over computing in the next 15 years or so and see if google's not defending themselves in court regarding various monopolies it comes to maintain.

Office Student Edition can be purchased for about $100. I'm sorry, but that's not highway robbery unless you're trying to compare it to OpenOffice. But then again, comparing any commercial software against free is not really apples to apples. If it were, M$ would already be out of business, instead of racking in $3B / QTR net profit after spending $500M - $1B in lawyer fees defending their monopolies.
