It's going to be a new world out there, things are changing.
It will be easier and easier to throw together web applications that are instanly available by only typing a url into your web browser. Microsoft is desperate to make sure that at least a percentage of these require Windows and/or Office in order to keep a lock on the OS and Office business. These tricks will keep Microsoft in the money for the near future. But Google will be increasing trying to isolate Microsoft by making everything interoperate, and basing everything on open standards. In the long run, that might very well work.
