This is for SuSE Linux Enterprise Server running on IBM's mainframes. Its SuSE's version of Linux on IBM hardware that passed EAL3, not Linux on all hardware period (RedHat is up next... if they are interested). Its costs money to get these things and the only benefit is governments and such can speak with you (its all a money thing). Even now, there isn't any reason to spend money to get every single release of the kernel on all the supported hardware certified. Its too expensive, and such things are left to the commercial distributors like SuSE and RedHat.
This makes me think that maybe all the talk about how secure Linux is is just the same wishful thinking...
Not, wishful but a logical conclusion (many base it on the number of viruses written... but thats not the right way). Linux adheres to the Unix specification, which itself has security as a corner stone. These specs are what make many unix system's default security to be of high quality. Now, since there is no argument that many Unix systems have more security than Windows, and Linux is build on the same foundation, its a good conclusion that Linux has more security than Windows in the same environment. Also, Linux doesn't have a uniform install base like Windows, its very heterogeneous in makeup. This gives another layer of security since an exploit on one computer doesn't guarantee it will work on another even if its the same distro.
Another thing, Linux makes as excellent desktop, I like KDE better than Windows XP's desktop. I don't believe it will go mainstream anytime soon, but the day is getting closer. And people haven't been saying that for a decade, more like the last 2-3. Also, I think this is the year that linux will make significant leaps on the desktop. Something in the order of Macs share, commercially. Right now, its really in the hands of all those application developers. - Posted by: doe_z Posted on: 01/21/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
