I talked to a Microsoft guy at the ITU conference in Geneva last week, and he noted that the sale of Symbian stock was a sign of Motorola's trust in the Windows Smartphone OS (Motorola is releasing one of those for AT&T wireless). In other words, the Symbian sale is used to proclaim the merits of Linux or Windows, depending on which you prefer.

My take: Motorola is looking to differentiate itself from Nokia, who is big into Symbian. Symbian is a glutted market as ALL the majors are doing Symbian. Rather than release yet ANOTHER Symbian phone that won't compare favorably simply because Nokia has a great brand (buy a Nokia Symbian phone or a Motorola Symbian phone?), they're going for differentiation. How do you differentiate? Back Linux and Windows, something Nokia ISN'T doing.

It's a good plan, IMO.
