Yes and I see more than irony.
They are not primarily interested in helping mankind out. They want to setup open source as an economic system. But they want to be the only system. They say changing formats is evil unless they do it. Standards is their favorite. Standards are set by economic forces that were determined by the market. Then another favorite is to get the gov't to restrict a free market so they can get started for the greater good. The thing is, once the restrictions are lifted, the free market will chew them to pieces. So that is why they always want the gov't involved. They are whining socialists. I like to call them professional victims of the software world.

Just document your work and anybody can do it, and it is yours till your death. You will release it under your own license. Give it away, charge for it whatever you want to do.
