The GPL doctrine was enacted so that for profit corporations wouldn't plunder the code taking all their good ideas. The real problem was MIT students were bright but didn't document their code. So the GPL is a umbrella protection policy.

If they had documented their code, they wouldn't be forced to share it. Since the GPL has 3 revisions in it so far, shows its incompatibility with the business enviroment. I wonder if they will scream like hell when it is time to surrender the copyright under the GPL license because of age. Then it will be truely free in the commons. A lot of GPL folks think they are the commons. They are not. Not even BSD, all though they are closer to it. The GPL license isn't forever.
