We need to be able to play copy protected movies and music on Linux.
Even though I disagree strongly with the tactics of the movie industry, and doubt they will ever come up with a method that can not be cracked, not being able to distribute DVD players and music players with commercial distributions would kill Linux and play right into Microsofts hands.
