I never understood the idea of taking something modular and incorporating it into a monolithic package. The maintenance costs should go up because of "ripple effect" change issues in the monolith. Why M$ continues to do this is truely mind-boggling. This way of thinking is what makes product releases like Riska take so darned long. M$ is constructing their OS and software like the old car companies made cars - i.e. 2 different groups designing parts for a certain area of the car, and then when it comes time to put them together - oh gee, they don't fit! Go get a bigger hammer . . .
