Perhaps if the signal to noise ratio were lower?
The deafness you observe may be in part a response to the shrillness of your voice. I believe that was Clemen's line, but don't quote me as having paraphrased him. You might also be working with outdated versions of some of the software about which you complain. Let's check.

Tried GIMP 2.0-pre2 yet? Searched out all the plug-ins you need? Just asking. There's some massive improvements to usability and features in there, but not colour management. Why?

Colour management won't be a possibility until EFI's patents expire. Don't blame the free or open software community for not implementing a something which is held as someonelse's exclusive IP. The most pernicious patents (I'm told) are: 4,500,919 (Schreiber), 4,941,038 (Walowit), 5,343,311 (Arazi). This page (http://www.khk.net/color/links.html) may also be helpful to your understanding. Remember, the impossible the community does immediately. For the patented we wait 19 years.

Office problems? Tried Open Office.org 1.1? Just asking. I've personally never had a problem with diocument conversion, but then my documents may not be as complex as your samples. Your clickage may not be commensurate, but the OOo team will continue to work until yours is. I believe the new table code entered the tree for 1.2, but you'll probably still need to tweak.

Business licenses for Windows over a certain number of seats do not work as a home license does. The copies of Windows in a large office are bought and paid for every year with a site license. Especially under the infamous License Six, money flows to Redmond simply to keep what the office already has. The cost isn't minimized. The cost is install Windows once and pay forever, even after the official end-of-life. When I hear of switching, or experiments with switching in business and government entities; the above is most often the cited reason.

I await a response, preferrably one that doesn't yell so loudly about that which cannot be but is, or that which isn't and cannot be.
