They are just starting, it took a few years to kill Netscape too.
They bolted IE to the OS, then they bolt the search engine to the browser. If it is built in, and ships fully integrated, with an extra row of buttons for searching, why bother with google? Google is not integrated. Sure, maybe Google could make a plug in, and maybe they could put their own row of buttons on the browser. But, how many corporations would allow employees to inshtall a search plug-in, even if it was better than the default? They want less to support, not more. And, how many consumers would want two rows of search buttons, even if there was a better one?

The answer is almost NONE.

Microsoft can use their Monopoly to slowley put other search engines out of business. You want to search the web, you have to buy Windows.
