conflict
The basic problem that MS runs into is that they control the desktop operating system. This control gives them tremendous power as they dictate the default softwares that the majority of people will use. Unfortunately, MS has used this power to bolt all of their add-ons to the operating system, which has created problems for competitors. Some will argue that this is the right of MS to do as it is their operating system and if others cannot offer sufficient justification for switching from the default applications, then they deserve to perish. Although there may be some justification to these claims, these monopolistic legal issues will continue to mount. A solution to the problem is to have the operating system independent of the other wares. I do not necessarily mean splitting Microsoft corporation, but rather requiring a more modular design with the core operating system independent of the add-ons. MS could still ship their add-ons with the OS, but not have them installed by default.
