Oh, And Lets Set The Record Straight
I use both Linux and Windows. I happen to like Windows XP, it is easier to use for applications and games in most instances but, when it comes to security and my data I go with Linux to secure it. I speak for the Windows users that still are using AOL and haven't a clue of what they are doing in the way of updates and such. They are the ones who leave themselves wide open to attacks and Microsoft expects them to know everything about securing their machines and keeping themselves safe from attack in the cyber world.

My colleague did a network sweep of a neighborhood once, and 85% of the people on wireless were running unsecure wireless, and their base station still had the manufacturer default password on it! Do you think that these average Joe home users have enough sense to know how to fully secure their Windows box?

What I'm saying is that neither Windows nor Linux is a perfect operating system, but as far as security goes, I will go with Linux every time for stability, security, and reliability. Our company is going to open source platforms with Oracle to hold our databases, as well as open source for web pages and e-mail. The fact remains that the overall response time between patching in the open source world and patching in the Microsoft world is like comparing apples to oranges. Open source has the patches out most of the time within a day of the vulnerability, Microsoft takes the "sit on my hands" approach of waiting until a certain number of individuals are affected before using their resources to solve the problem.

Neither side is perfect, but Linux is more ahead of the game than Microsoft is.

Yes, I use XP daily at my desktop and at home, but I host my web server and e-mail on Linux, and store all my data on a linux server because I know that I can rely on it to be up 99.9% of the time without having to worry about unecessary crashes or someone hacking into my machine through the firewall.

XP is a great gaming OS, if Linux would catch up in that area I would see no need for Windows in my house at all anymore.
