Power management for mobile computers is great, but I don't see any advantage in their new paradigm versus the current implementation. For desktops, it just doesn't matter. My org. has a 24/7 power-on policy (for remote administration and monitoring purposes). We configure the power management on all new machines before they're distributed to users so the monitors kick off after 15 minutes of inactivity, etc. Standby is not used on desktops, and hibernate is not used at all. And at home, the power use is negligible. I have 4 computers (and a laptop) which are always on, and my power bill hasn't substantially increased compared to when there was only one machine.
