I apply patches...
because i find that my computer run better with them applied.

and about the spyware, I personally don't get any spyware, and niether do my networks. However home users are usually infested, and spyware royally screwed everything up mostley from lost resources and partly because the coding is awful.

Never had any problem with windows update whatsoever.
