Pay attention when they do something right? What did they "do right" here? Stop not following what they were ordered to do in the first place by the DOJ? You don't think that M$ got some calls first about this issue? You think when the DOJ approached them about this that it was the first time they heard about it?
If I put a gun to your head and force you to hand out girl scout cookies, you are not doing the right thing. You have been made to "do the right thing". If you did it of your own accord that would be a different story.
If Microsoft lowered their prices and opened up their file formats that would be doing the right thing.
